“We highly recommend Sarah. We booked her for a post wedding photoshoot and right from the very start Sarah has been flexible, easy going and professional. On the day, she gave us enough direction but also gave us a lot of space for us to do our own thing, so the pics turned out super natural. Also, she works so fast, we had our shoot on a Sunday and received the previews on Monday! Very talented photographer. We have some amazing photos now we can treasure for life ♥”
– Winnie & Jonathan

Meet the rather lovely Winnie and Jonathan. In June I had a little drive out to Renfrewshire, specifically Jonathan’s family estate, to meet up with them for their post wedding photoshoot. A chance for them to get dressed up again, take a walk around the grounds and generally have a grand ol’ time while I took their photos.

Some Winter wedding tips

Winnie and Jonathan got married back in December 2020 and sadly didn’t have a lot of time (well, light) to get all the photos of family they wanted as well as photos of themselves. Whilst I didn’t photograph their wedding day – I won’t hold that against them! – they knew that I do a lot of post wedding portrait shoots in and around Glasgow so got in touch to get something organised.

I’m just going to stray off topic here to leave a couple of my top winter wedding tips. Just in case you’re planning your own day in November – March.

  • Keep in mind that the sun sets very early – always earlier than you think – in the winter months. When you’re planning your ceremony and reception timings, work back from sunset. Especially if you want to get outside for your portraits.
  • If you can only get a later ceremony time then it’s worth thinking about having a ‘first look’. That’s where you both meet up ahead of the ceremony, have a lovely moment where you see each other for the first time and then get some pictures together. It can really take away some of those pre-wedding nerves and mean you’ve got more reception time to mingle with your guests.
  • Too many group shots are not a great thing. It’s always worth having a chat with your photographer when you put together your family group photos list. They will be more than happy to suggest groupings, advise on how it will work with your timings, and help you navigate those tricky family politics. Well, we might not always be the best help on the last one but we can certainly try, we’re willing to take the blame for Aunt Anna not getting in a shot ;)
  • If you have tried and can’t shift timings about, can’t adjust those group photos or have a first look (and sometimes, logistics just get in the way) then fear not! A post wedding photoshoot is the solution…

What is a post wedding photoshoot?

Exactly what it says on the tin! A photoshoot of the two of you that takes place sometime after your big day. The beauty of it is that you are free from all restrictions. It can take place wherever you like, take as much time as you need and wear whatever you like. Most couples choose to get dressed back up in their wedding gear but the choice really is yours. If you do decide to don your wedding gladrags again then you are free from worry about dirt and mud as your wedding has been and gone. This is a last hurrah for your dress/kilt/suit.

Winnie, Jonathan and I really made the most of our time wandering around the family estate. I loved the long, winding driveway, as well as the blooming rhododendron bushes – they always make a colourful backdrop. Then Jonathan suggested we head over to the dilapidated Walled Garden. Well, anyone who knows me will know my ears pricked up at this, I love anything ruined and falling apart! Then I spotted the rather amazing, falling down greenhouse. Complete with smashed glass panes. Winnie and Jonathan looked at me rather dubiously when I pointed it out. But a photographer always knows best and we see things that you might not. It looked pretty darn cool in the pictures! (See below!)

We also took a wee trip over to Knapps Loch for some more scenic landscape photos. It was so quiet, not a soul around. This is such a gem of a place that not many people know about. Again, trust your photographer! We know all the hidden spots.

So, that’s enough of me wittering on. Here’s Winnie, Jonathan, a funky greenhouse, and some gorgeous Scottish scenery.

And if you fancy another shot at getting dolled up and having a few photos then hit me up!
